Paolo Monologue from The Rights of the Soul

No, no. A woman is for all; a wife for myself alone. Do you believe one marries a woman because she is virtuous? Never! I marry her because I love her and because I believe she loves me. There are a thousand virtuous women, there is one that I love, one alone who loves me ... if there is one. But I am not a fool. I know that love is a fleeting thing, a spark that can be extinguished in an instant. I know that the heart can be fickle, and that the one I love today may not be the one I love tomorrow. Yet, I cannot help but give myself to this feeling, to this passion that consumes me. What is life without love? A barren wasteland, a desolate place where joy is but a memory. I would rather risk the pain of loss than live in a world devoid of love's sweet embrace. So I will cherish her, hold her close, and fight for her heart. For in this moment, she is my everything, and I will not let her go without a fight.
