I am afraid I am too old to learn how to steal. Unless one begins very young, one can never learn it. Gerardo. Don't feel hurt. My dear sir—if I could.... The thought of how you have to struggle.... I happen to have received some five hundred marks more than my fee.... I could give you a little of it, but I am afraid it would not help you much. You see, I am not a rich man, and I have my own expenses to consider. I have to think of my own future, and I cannot afford to be too generous. But I do sympathize with you, and I wish I could do more. It is a hard world we live in, and I know how difficult it can be to make ends meet. I have been there myself, and I understand the desperation that can drive a man to steal. But I must tell you, it is not the answer. It will only lead to more trouble, and in the end, you will be worse off than you are now. I wish I could offer you some advice, but I am afraid I am not in a position to do so. All I can say is that you must find a way to make an honest living. It may be hard, but it is the only way to truly find peace of mind.
