Ann Monologue from Mary's Wedding

From Mary's Wedding by Gilbert Cannan

female · melancholic · 27 sec

She growed up lovin' Bill, and 'tis a set thing. She've waited long years. 'Tis done now, an' what they make for theirselves they make, an' 'tis not for us to go speirin' for the trouble they may make for theirselves, but only to pray that it may pass them by. I can see it all now, the way it was meant to be. The sun shining down on them, the laughter, the joy. But life has a way of twisting things, doesn't it? We think we know what we want, but sometimes what we want isn't what we need. And in the end, we are left with the choices we've made, the paths we've taken. I wish her well, I truly do. But I can't help but feel a pang of sadness for what could have been. For the dreams that will never be realized, the love that will never be fully expressed. It's a bittersweet thing, love. It can lift us to the highest heights, but it can also bring us crashing down. So I stand here, watching, waiting, hoping that she finds her happiness. That she finds a way to navigate the stormy seas of life. Because in the end, that's all we can do, isn't it? Hope for the best, and pray that the troubles pass us by.
